Our mandate

The Press Information Department (PID) is the principal department of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. Headed by the Principal Information Officer (PIO), PID has been operating since 1947 with the mission to establish an authentic source for the timely dissemination of information to the people of Pakistan through all forms of media.

PID carries out its operations round the clock through a structured mechanism of media projection, monitoring and feedback. It publicises government policies and, in parallel, apprises the Government of the public reception of those policies as reflected in domestic and international media.

The PID coordinates with all ministries and divisions to issue authoritative government communications.

What we do

Each working day, PID issues press releases, official statements, photographs and translations on behalf of the Federal Government. We facilitate accredited journalists, manage the Central Media List, run the journalist welfare programmes (including the Prime Minister's Health Insurance Scheme), and coordinate with regional information offices across all four provinces, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Our structure

PID operates from its Head Office in Islamabad and through regional offices in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Sukkur, Faisalabad, Hyderabad, Muzaffarabad and Gilgit. The department comprises wings covering press, publicity, accreditation, photo, internal publicity, external publicity, library and reference, and administration.

Our principles

We commit to: accuracy in every official release; timeliness regardless of hour or day; equal access for all accredited media without discrimination; and transparency in how government communications are produced and shared.
